If maintaining and styling your waves feels like a task, turn to these best shampoos for wavy hair—they deep-cleanse, boost hydration, and provide volume

Indians rarely have poker straight hair. Most fall somewhere on the textured spectrum, from gentle waves to tight curls. Yet beauty aisles keep pretending they do. The best shampoos for wavy hair in India, then, are less about vanity and more about everyday care.

A recent PwC quantitative survey of nearly 19,500 individuals across nine countries found that Indians with wavyand curly hair were most likely to report professional stress. The survey highlights a pattern, not a cause. In India, textured hair often carries a cultural weight, coded as less professional, harder to manage, and more time-consuming.

Straight hair continues to dominate as the aspirational norm, from advertising to Bollywood, leaving those with textured hair to feel like they have extra work to do. That bias shows up in perception too. Another survey found that 71 per cent of Indians consider short, coloured and curly hair less beautiful than long, straight hair on women.

Hairstylist Rod Anker explains it simply: “Wavy hair has a slight wave, not always uniform throughout; it is often underneath or just the sides.” Loose S-shaped waves signal wavy hair, while tight spirals point to curls. Wavy hair is often misunderstood or, worse, straightened into submission. The truth is, waves do not need to be tamed—they need care.

“Just like curly hair, wavy hair is reactive to moisture too. Hence, the moisture content needs to be paramount to bring out the best,” says Anker. The right shampoo can help decide whether waves fall flat or stay defined. Formulas with shea butter, aloe vera or murumuru butter hydrate and help waves hold their shape. Anker’s advice is practical: “Always comb the hair with the conditionerin the hair; once rinsed, don’t comb or aggregate the hair post shower. Pat the hair to remove excessive moisture—don’t rub.”
